The High-lites: Taking a little musical trip

Rock music and a musician’s life are notoriously linked to drinking and the drug culture (thank God). Yes, many musicians and bands remain drug/alcohol free (or at the least, moderated), yet the assumptions linger. Why the connection? Critics of the culture always ask “why are drugs or alcohol (hopefully, both) so integral to a musicians life and work?” You know the thinking, right?

20121029-025746.jpg

Most obvious response to the killjoys who ask “why the high life?”…

“Cus’ it’s fun, dumbasses”.

For a more reasoned response you could tell the naysayers how drugs and booze help to prepare for anything, even a terrifying super-storm…

20121029-071302.jpg

With this in mind Sing For Me offers for your amusement (or longings) a drug and alcohol themed walk through the musical world…

We all know how politically and socially aware musicians and music fans can be. Sometimes politics can be so tedious, though. We’re lucky that there’s always…

20121029-100633.jpg

Occasionally, however, drug fueled great ideas will turn out to be not so much with the great.

Only a drug induced psychosis could explain why the music gods would think this is a good idea…

20121029-033303.jpg

20121029-033626.jpg

Truth be told we humans aren’t alone in seeking the higher road to creativity…

20121029-095048.jpg

So why are we so convinced of the truth of..

20121029-034831.jpg

So much so that we even write heavy theoretical tomes…

20121029-035053.jpg

And some works which don’t exactly ask us to “just say no”

20121029-063647.jpg

Though there are the ones that are, say, a bit ominous..

20121029-035256.jpg

“Pleasure and pain” and “drugs” in “music”? Gotta admit, that sounds almost on track…

20121029-035607.jpg

Cus’ without a drink or a smoke this ain’t nearly so funny…

20121029-045524.jpg

This either… 20121029-045710.jpg

With the bass booming ‘n’ the booze flowin’ you can almost catch the rhythm of whichever genius thought of…

20121029-050034.jpg

not to mention the chain of altered consciousness that must have been needed when taking this little quiz…

20121029-050650.jpg

Now of course the naysayers do like to step in to spoil the party…

20121029-051220.jpg

And sometimes they hit with a cheap shot…

20121029-051425.jpg

In which case ya can always hit back. Ya might wanna go lowbrow…

20121029-051647.jpg

The anti-drug/alcohol crusaders def speak a very different language…

20121029-052331.jpg
{not all drugs are as harmless as music}

But even that crusader had to appeal to some element of music’s lower impulses… “Hmm, rock and roll, drugs, and…whhh??..”

20121029-053441.jpg

Ah, little Euro bastards..

20121029-053821.jpg

And we gotta admit this drug/alcohol free music fest does look like it was amazing…

20121029-055547.jpg

though even without the chemical refreshments they clearly wanted a way to simulate the experience.

Lord knows one needs some form of chemical inducements to enjoy (or even to understand)…

Um, why, and um… Just. No.
Not enough Jager in the world…

Though this guy just might find a way to harmonize with even her crap sound…

20121029-060341.jpg

This fantastic lady found a way to meld her fantastic sound with a random drunk schlub…

Proving conclusively that booze and a happy spirit (along with some acoustic genius and a bit of tolerance) make for beautiful music.

This guys schtick, however, is not and will never be a song (or an um, political (?) statement) we’d want to hear twice.

20121029-062409.jpg
{insert personal political statements here….
20121029-065051.jpg
20121029-071129.jpg
20121029-065245.jpg }

When all is said and done music and mental alteration by licit and/or illicit chemicals certainly can be amazing bedfellows 20121029-065955.jpg

And that drug thang certainly don’t always make things worse

20121029-070103.jpg

Just a bit of 20121029-070749.jpg

And certainly a bit more of 20121029-071006.jpg

{insert personal political statement}
20121029-071544.jpg

And the world of music, the musician, and the music fan is shot through with beauty….

20121029-105307.jpg

With this in mind, please enjoy something slightly different.

How many special people change? How many lives are living strange? Where were you while we were getting high? Slowly walking down the hall Faster than a cannon ball Where were you while we were getting high? Someday you will find me Caught beneath the landslide In a Champagne Supernova in the sky Someday you will find me Caught beneath the landslide In a Champagne Supernova A Champagne Supernova in the sky

In recognition of Hunter’s hardcore moodiness these days Future Fusion Metal {self-coined, self descriptive term} rockers Mnemic have today’s Song of the Day spot with I’ve Been You.

Having flashbacks?

With Hunter soon to reach the dubious milestone of spending a 1/4 century out of the rathole of despair and boredom which was high school he’s feeling nostalgic for the lightness of his youth.

This week Buzzfeed’s Music Editor Matthew Perpetua seduced music fans of a certain age group into a trip down memory lane with his group of ‘vintage’ music ads (and fuck you, Buzzfeed, for labeling these pics ‘vintage’!).

This music flashback from the late 80s – mid 90s might make folks yearn for their old Walkmans and tapes of The Real World London.

Saving suicidal druggie frontman a Republican Creed?

GULF OF OMAN (Sept. 24, 2008) Scott Stapp, for...

GULF OF OMAN (Sept. 24, 2008) Scott Stapp, former lead singer of the band Creed, signs a guitar for a Sailor during an autograph session on the mess decks of the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76). Stapp and his band put on a concert and signed autographs for the Sailors during an event sponsored by Navy Entertainment. Ronald Reagan is deployed to the U.S. 5th Fleet area of responsibility. Republican Presidential candidates, drug ingesting suicidal hard rockers, Fox News, Rap heroes, endorsements, trashtalk….Never thought these subjects would find themselves in a single post. However, when the glue which holds such disparate subjects together is Scott Stapp,

frontman for Creed , music’s love-’em-or-really-really-despise-and-trash-talk-’em-at-every-opportunity punching bag

nothing should surprise.

Yep, Stapp, frontman for rock’s most reviled band (other than Nickelback),

finds himself in the news (and fielding attacks) again.

Fresh off of the release of the revealing and touching story of rapper T.I. saving his life during Stapp’s suicide attempt the singer finds himself facing criticism.

Folks aren’t on Stapp’s case for his drug use, for loose lips and trash-talk, or for family turmoil. Though no one’s business but Stapp’s, any of these would legitimately be open to criticism. Stapp is instead on the hook ‘cus his arms are no longer wide open for President Obama.

Stapp hasn’t endorsed Obama’s opponent Governor Mitt Romney yet.

Scott, bro, keep the faith. Don’t let all those crapweasles get you down.

Vid of the Day – Voodoo Glow Skulls – Dead Soldiers

Halloween’s around the corner and Hunter’s feeling a bit festive. Today’s vid of the day is a fan created gem for Dead Soldiers by So Cal veterans (nearly 25 years together!) Voodoo Glow Skulls. With a bit of whimsy which just-almost-but-not-quite blends (should it be any other way?!) with ska punk’s hardcore sound, the Tim Burton-esque feel of Dead Soldiers is perfect for the holiday.

For more great music from Voodoo Glow Skulls visit their Home Page or on MySpace

Psy: so animated!
